ice fishing big tip up

December 29, 2025

Nestled in the heart of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, Tomahawk is more than a scenic small town — it’s a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts, anglers, trail riders, and those seeking community and connection. Known for its abundant lakes and waterways, welcoming local culture, and vibrant recreation scene, Tomahawk invites visitors to experience the best of Northwoods life.

Snowmobiling

With more than 400 miles of groomed snowmobile trails weaving through the forests, lakes, and rolling hills of Lincoln and Oneida Counties, riders of all skill levels are invited to explore scenic winter landscapes and connect with fellow snowmobilers. The extensive trail network links to more than 900 miles of additional groomed trails in neighboring regions, offering endless exploration opportunities deep in Wisconsin’s Northwoods.

Tomahawk has earned official recognition as a Snowmobile-Friendly Community, an honor given by the Wisconsin Association of Snowmobile Clubs in acknowledgement of its community support, trail amenities, safety programs, and accessibility. Riders can easily access trail-side eateries, warm taverns, and welcoming local businesses that invite riders inside to share stories, recharge, and connect with the community right from the trail — often without ever needing to trailer back to their vehicles.

Locally organized snowmobile clubs play a big part in keeping the trails in top shape throughout the season. Groups like the Northwoods Passage Snowmobile Club, Knight Owls, and Northern Trails Unlimited log countless volunteer hours grooming trails, brushing corridors, maintaining equipment, and hosting fundraisers that support ongoing trail stewardship. These efforts ensure riders can enjoy smooth winter journeys and vibrant community connections year after year.

Before heading out, check for up-to-date trail conditions and maps at the Tomahawk Regional Chamber or online — snow and weather vary year to year, and current status helps ensure the best experience for all riders.

Ice Fishing

Local anglers often fish a combination of tip-ups and jigging setups, working deep holes and structure where fish congregate through the winter months. Crappies and bluegills offer action throughout the season, while walleyes tend to be especially active in early ice and around underwater channels.

Lake Alice — just east of Tomahawk — is particularly popular for ice fishing, drawing anglers targeting walleye, crappie, bluegills, and perch through the ice. Its size and variety of fishing opportunities make it ideal for families and experienced anglers alike. Annual events like the Alice in Winterland Ice Fishing Derby celebrate this winter tradition, bringing the community together on the ice each year.

Safety is always a priority — knowing ice thickness and conditions is essential before heading out, especially near river inflows or channels where currents can affect ice formation.
